EATS: Bansko's Mexana ("Bunnies !")

It had dawned upon me that this whole time we had a trip to Bulgaria that we only stayed in one location, the town of Central Bansko. One night, we went out and went out of Central Bansko, towards its equivalent of Stockholm's Gamla Stan, the old town

After some ten minutes of walking, we have arrived. We were immediately greeted by a man with a crazy looking outfit, overseeing rabbits above a sign infront of the restaurant. This man was very friendly, he even let my sister and our friend, Talia to take the rabbits inside the restaurant... thus the affectionate term for this restaurant has been born: "Bunnies".

The adults had a long and uneventful discussion about which kind of wine to drink before we ordered appetizers.

Tonight's appetizer: salad with onion, tomatoes, coleslaw, cucumbers and goat's cheese. I liked this dish because of the different tastes you get when you mix and match the different elements of the dish, and that cucumbers are my favorite.

Onto some mains! The first one was some veal shanks with roasted potatoes. The veal was tender and satisfying, but was much more impressive when combined with the potatoes. Sadly, no photo.

We also had chicken, bacon and beef with vegetables, actually cooked in a ceramic pot! The bacon was very, very delicious (I actually finished them all). The chicken was also a highlight of this dish.

Finally, dessert. Something I see a lot in menus of restaurants here in Bulgaria is the yogurt, so I decided to try some frozen yogurt with strawberry jam. Prior to this, I have been a fan of yogurt, and this just raised my obsession even more. The jam was on the top of the yogurt, so a good mix was done before I took my first bite. It was heaven! Simply delicious.

(It was served in a clay pot!)

My Trip To Munkedal (Near Gothenburg)

Remember that update post that I talked about going to Gothenburg? I was really off. Turns out that we went to a cozy little town about a hundred kilometers away from Gothenburg named Munkedal.

So there isn't much to blog about Munkedal, though. It was really just a simple and quiet suburb type of town. One thing I'd like to talk about in the town was its nature.

The place where we stayed at was covered with trees. There were lots of trees, like birch, oak and some kind of fir or pine that are used for making Christmas trees.

We enjoyed the company of my mom's cousin, her husband and their adorable two year old. And did I mention their excellent food? She made us some olive bread and potato and leek soup with bacon bits. The soup is to die for!

Munkedal is a very pleasant experience and I would 100% go back. I wouldn't go again by train or car though, because long train rides make me dizzy and want to puke, and long car rides are just uncomfortable. I would prefer planes, but they're quite expensive. Everything has its pros and cons, though.

Hötorget and the Stockholm Concert Hall (Konserthuset)

{Due to the fact that I'm not using a Swedish keyboard, every time "Hotorget" is said in this post, the first letter "o" always has two dots above it.}

What is Hotorget? Hotorget is basically a square in the very heart of Stockholm. Since I've been here in Stockholm, Hotorget is basically the site where you can get some souvenirs from Stockholm, like mugs, magnets, shirts for affordable prices.

I also forgot to mention that one of the most noticeable things being sold in Hotorget are fresh (or so I hope that they're fresh) produce. You can find tons of blueberries, strawberries, Swedish mushrooms and all sorts of flowers and seeds being sold here at the square.

According to Wikipedia, flea markets are arranged here in Hotorget on Sundays, but I have personally never seen flea markets in this area of Stockholm since the day we've visited.

Hotorget also has the Stockholm Concert Hall (locally referred to as "Konserthuset", literally translated as "The Concert House"), which is the not-that-highly-emphasized blue building in the picture above and below:

The Stockholm Concert Hall directly faces the markets of fruits, vegetables and souvenirs in the square. This building also is the cite on where all the Nobel Prizes (except for the Peace Prize, which is given in Oslo, Norway) are given.

There are so many useful establishments just within a two-six minute walk within the square and the concert hall. Here are some useful establishment examples:

  • Hotorget Tunnelbana (Subway) Station is just a minute away. Literally.
  • Kjell & Company - A store that sells electronic accessories and peripherals (plugs, conncetors, etc
  • Kungshallen - A building where you can find a variety of food stalls, coffeehouses and restaurants.
  • Akademibokhandlen - A shop that sells books. It's a chain (along with Kjell & Co.), so don't be surprised that you can see these kind of stores in a range of locations.
  • Forex Bank - Currency exchange offices.

You really need to read more.

  • Stockholm Public Library
  • An architectural wonder, the library located in Odenplan and is circular in shape.
  • Stockholm City Hall
  • Where the Nobel Prize banquet is held, the Stockholm City Hall is trully a highly-recommend attraction.
  • Skansen -- Stockholm's Open Air Museum
  • An open-air museum that lets you experience the simple and old Nordic lifestyle. Also get ready for a magnificent view of Stockholm.
