Stockholm's Public Library

Today, me and two of my friends, Gloria and Linh opted to go to Stockholm City today (Saturday) and just explore and roam around.

Linh and I met in the Odenplan Tunnelbana station and walked to Stockholms Stadsbibliotek or the Stockholm Public Library, to meet Gloria.

You might notice that the library is kinda weird in terms of the shape of its outside. It kinda looks like a cylinder with a normal shaped building affixed to it.

When you walk on the main entrance, you will be welcomed with an awesome view. The library is basically like a large circle. There are some pathways that lead you to non-circular quiet study rooms with more books about geography, science and demographics.

The large circle is divided into three floors which can be accessed via staircases. Along every part of the circle are shelves of books, either in Swedish or English with tons and tons of genres and fields of knowledge.

The View From The Third Floor

By the way, if you opt for a small snack or a coffee, I think that there is also a cafe inside the library itself. Once you go out of the library, there is a small park, a McDonalds, a Thai Food Stall and a shop where you can buy stationery.

Thank you Linh and Gloria for making this day extra fun!

Why Should We Travel?

So a lot might agree that travelling is real, pure fun. Besides the original response of "because its fun" or "I like going to other places", why do we really need to travel?

Personally, I enjoy travelling because I also want to experience the culture of other places, especially other countries. With this, I want to make the most out of my travelling experience by researching online for some travel advice, tips and etc.

The world really is our playground. If the word "playground" means "a travelling haven", this would be a very accurate metaphor. I really like how people describe the physical Earth as their playground, because it shows me that they also want to enjoy the good things in life, and what each and every place has to offer.

Now let's go on to something only a handful of people talk about. The benefits of travelling.

1] It helps us with our ability to understand perspectives.
If you are travelling, there is a solid possibility that you can get an outlook of the lives of the people that are natives or locals on that particular country or region. Say if you take a trip to a highly-agrarian country and find tons of farmers harvesting their crops, you may understand that the situation for work in that country is on agriculture and on farming. You can also notice different perspectives in the form of the people. Maybe you see that people are skinny because most of their food are non-fattening. There is a wide range of possibilities.

2] We have the opportunity to focus on more leisurely things and decrease stress.
While travelling, you are focused on the pleasure you feel because you're relaxing, enjoying that beautiful view of a countryside or on top of a crazy-high tower, or spending your cash on that savvy three course meal. This lets you forget about your problems and other stressful stuff. At least when you travel, you are focused on more fun, leisurely stuff instead of boring old stuff that increases your blood pressure.

3] Travelling creates memories that last a lifetime. Trying something for the first time is great!
If you travel, you may come across some scenery that you have never encountered some thing like it before. You can then proudly say that it is your first time to do something. So let's say its your first time to go paragliding in Brazil, or eating some kind of bizarre street food in China, all make a mark on your life.

4] Activate social connections / make new friends.
Travelling is also exposure to mass amounts of people all around the world. Why not make friends along your positive journey? By the way, always be wary of friendly strangers, but other than that, it does not hurt to make friends. Become a social butterfly.

So that's it. More than what you expected? I hope so. No?, well that's fine. I want to become one of those advocates of travelling, because travelling is awesome. As awesome as eating. So are you up with me? Would you be a travelling advocate?

TRAVEL ADVICE for Sweden

Going to Sweden? Here are some useful travel tips for you to know!

1] Avoid sit down restaurants if you're budget travelling. Really expensive. A source tells me that one meal here does not cost less than USD 20. Try going to stalls that often have sausages, Thai food and ice cream. You can buy some stuff with half (or more than half) the price.

2] Do sample some of its local cuisine. Try dammsugare (literally translated as a vacuum cleaner), kanelbulle, traditional meatballs or any of those cheap supermarket pastries

Sidenote: Read one of my many "Pastries from Hemkop" blog posts here. Tack!

3] Join a fika! A fika is a very traditional Swedish act where you and your friends sit down, have a coffee, maybe some dammsugare on the side and chat. Very, very Swedish indeed, ja?

4] Go to the Vasa Museum and Skansen. The Vasa Ship sank in 1628, on its maiden or first voyage. Go to Skansen if you want to take a look at the Old Fashioned Nordic Lifestyle. Click here for my blog post about the Vasa Museum or here for our Skansen trip.

5] If you will be staying in Sweden for a long time, you will eat something out of a tube. I think there's some cheese in a tube, caviar and other crazy stuff. Trust me. Not that appetizing, but you will do that if you will be staying for more than a month.

6] Keep it "lagom". Loosely translated, "lagom" means not too much, not too little, but just right or in moderation. Clothes? Keep it "lagom". Food in a buffet? Keep it "lagom". Budget? Keep it "lagom".

7] Enjoy their natural offerings. By that, I mean nature. Just enjoy what should be enjoyed in Sweden's natural world. Just don't cut trees, pollute or any kind of bad stuff that destroy the environment. I think it's illegal (if not, it should be).

So I leave you with this funny but meaningful Swedish proverb:
"Smaken ar som baken - delad"

My interpretation of this quote is that people can't always agree with each other on one topic. It is okay to disagree, as long as it can be resolved in an orderly manner.
If you want the English translation of the proverb, here it is:

"Taste is like a butt -- divided".

EATS: More Hemköp Pastries! {Bon Voyage, Stephanie!}

So another good friend of mine, Stephanie will go back to Canada after over one year of staying here in Stockholm. Long story short, she treated us with pastries from Hemköp, that supermarket I had two posts on.

Click here to see more of my thoughts about Hemköp's doughnuts, or here for my thoughts about their Danish Pastry. I am not getting paid by Hemköp, even though most of my "EATS" post comes from them.

So we bought a chocolate muffin for me, a kind of carrot cake for Patricia, a soda for Linh and three doughnuts for Stephanie.

The muffin was tasteless, I admit. Can you see those little chunks / squares of chocolate above the muffin? Yeah, they were the only things that were good... The doughnuts seemed to be freshly baked, but in my opinion, the doughnuts should have been freshly baked and hot. (My sister ate one of the doughnuts, Stephanie had two... I can't exactly remember). Most of the pastries were priced at SEK 9, but I think the doughnuts were 3 for SEK 15 or SEK 25.

Thank you Stephanie! I wish you a great life in Canada! As one of my favorite Youtubers Joey Graceffa would say it, may the odds be ever in your favor, goodbye!!
