EATS: Stockholm Fisk

For 2014's Mother's Day, we took mom to Stockholm Fisk, one of her favorite restaurants since our stay here in Stockholm.

As we were perusing their interesting menu, we got greeted by a complementary basket of bread and butter.

I got the white asparagus with French goat cheese and Iberico Berotta. White asparagus is a rarity in Europe, and is grown only for a short period of time. I have tried white asparagus before, and I did not enjoy it. I don't enjoy asparagus in general - white or green. 

Impressively, the white asparagus in this meal tasted so much better than the first ones I've tried. They were tender and complemented the goats cheese. The addition of the ham was an excellent touch to the meal.

On the flip side, my mom and sister tried the authentic toast Skagen, which is essentially a piece of toast with fresh prawns smothered with dill and mayonnaise on top. My dad had the moules / mussels. I have tried samplings of all our appetizers, and all were very delicious.

Onto mains. I had the "grown up" version of the fish and chips (by grown up, I mean it's not from the kid's menu). Needless to say, the presentation was so cute! The fries were served in a mini version of the baskets you use for the deep-fryer. Also, the dish was served with curry remoulade and guacamole. 

By itself, the fish tasted quite plain. When combined with the curry sauce, the meal was more interesting. The remoulade turned the flat and plain flavor of the fish into an Indian, citron-y, enjoyable main course. Fries are fries, therefore it was good. A bit disappointed with my main... I hope that I stuck with my gut and chose the mackerel, but that's for next time.

My parents got the platter of assorted seafoods from the seasonal menu, with fresh seafood such as crab, fresh prawns, oysters, lobster and caviar. This was also served with sliced toasted bread.

This is only one side of this humongous plate of the sea!

For the first time in my life, I tried lobster. It was quite hard work actually to take off the meat, but it was great. I also enjoyed the slices of salmon served on the platter on bread, mixed with a tad of mayonnaise, caviar and some shredded onion. Delightful!

For dessert, I just had a plain old scoop of vanilla ice cream with almonds, serving as a nice little finishing touch to the meal.

Today was filled with trying out new different wonders of the sea. Lobster, mussels, toast skagen. These new experiences and firsts will be unforgettable, and more are surely to come!

A One Day Getaway In Sigtuna

Stockholm is a very wonderful place. Sometimes, you just really want to get away from the hustle and bustle that is in Stockholm and just go to a  very relaxing place.

A few days back, me and two of my good friends went to a city just under fifty kilometers away from Stockholm called Sigtuna.

After a forty-five minute car ride, we arrived at Sigtuna proper. We quickly got to tour the town and even sit and chat at the one of the oldest coffee houses in Sweden, Tant Brun!

We then walked to the pier where we saw a ton of boats, and this very astounding view of the surrounding islands. At the harbor, we got to see some ducks and birds hanging around and got the chance to feed them!

We then had lunch at the local pizzeria, where it offered awesome views of the city.

Afterwards, we tried to drive to the Skolkoster Castle, but we couldn't find the way so we turned back to Sigtuna, and got a humongous ice cream at the shops at the pier.

Words cannot describe the excitement and the joy that I felt while roaming around this small, cozy, astounding city. It was quite of a tight fit for a day, but I got to spend it with two of my craziest friends and had a very filling mushroom and ham pizza for lunch. There was only so much time to spend in this wonderful paradise, so I look forward in going there again sometime!

Hello everyone! Time for another update!

(So sorry if there's so much updates...)

So January is finished and here comes our first official international trip for 2014! We're going to Bulgaria from Sunday (the 9th) to next Saturday (the 15th)! We'll be going on a skiing / sledding adventure in a town called Bansko in southwestern Bulgaria. 

We're not sure yet if there will be Wifi there, so don't be alarmed if I don't post anything during the times. Update: There will be Wifi in the apartment where we will be staying, but there will be two scheduled posts before the posts in Bulgaria start, to give me a buffer time. Rest assured that I will be blogging about this, so just stay tuned! Hopefully, I'll make up the time by posting some facts about travelling in European countries, but I have no plan yet.

So, just stay tuned to my blog, and wish us a great trip to Bulgaria. Peace!

2013 - FAVORITES {Happy New Year!}

2013 was a very ecstatic year. Lots of things happened, and I visited three countries (well, 2.. Hong Kong is a SAR of China) As every month ends, I always post a Favourites. But since a year will end, I figured to assemble all my favorite and most memorable moments of the whole year. Here they are:

- Hong Kong, 2013 - A prominent trip to Disneyland. Couldn't remember much (this post was posted like 4-6 months after the trip), but there was also a heck of a lot of night market trips. 

- Stockholm: The Vasa Museum - A ship sank on it's first voyage in the 1600's and was rebuilt (did I use a correct word to describe it?) with a really careful eye for detail. 

- Stockholm's City Hall - A quiet Sunday walk (almost) ended with a visit to Stockholm's City Hall. For me, it is one of the most iconic Swedish buildings ever.

- (Eats) Tim Tams from Australia! - I just love their dark chocolate ones :)

- The Stockholm City Museum - A class trip to a very educational and interactive museum showcasing the history of Stockholm. 

- Gamla Stan (Stockholm's Old Town) - An area with awesome building architecture, (some of my friends say that they have) good ice cream and a heck of a lot of museums to go to. 

- Munkedal, A Town Off Gothenburg - Sometimes all you need is good company, nature, and some potato and leek soup with fried bacon bits. 

- (Eats) All Star Sportsbar - Stockholm - The place where I started to get obsessed with sour cream / cool ranch dip. Try their mozzarella sticks.

- Bangkok, Thailand - A stop to get our Biometrics IC (Identification Card) for Sweden. Go to Terminal 21, probably my most favorite shopping mall, ever.

- Stockholm, Sweden - I've done numerous blog posts about Stockholm, and I live there. Go to Gamla Stan, and definitely check out the Vasa!! 

- Group Bonding @ Alabang Town Center - Blog post out on January 2! {shame that this was a spoiler}

*sigh*, this year was a blast. 2014 will come, and hopefully it'll be nice to us. Thank you for supporting my blog, everyone! This few months of blogging became kinda haggard with the charger and that....

Philippine Slang

In celebration of our flight to the Philippines tomorrow, here's some basic Philippine slang or, salitang kalye (street-speak / lingo)

• Uno, Dos, Tres... Once you become accustomed to the Philippines, and you find yourself walking throughout its neighbourhood streets, buying something from a sari-sari store, you will question the prices. The shopkeeper would then tell you the price, commonly in Spanish. Ex. When you buy a candy costing PHP 2, the shopkeeper would most likely tell you that is costs "dos", not "dalawa" (Two in Filipino). 

• Yosi is Bad. In Philippine "sari-sari stores", you would be able to buy cigarettes, even if you're a minor. The people who actually smoke though, would commonly refer cigarettes as yosi. But remember, yosi also harms the people around you!! 

• Chibog, Kaon, Lafang... Ano Pa Ba? Filipinos have a really big variety of food, mixed with Asian cultures... If you hear a Filipino mentioning, chibog or lafang or whatever, they basically mean that they will eat or the mean something related to eating or food. In the context of... "May chibog dyan." = "There's food there"

I'm sure there's many more, but that's all the things I've found within 30 minutes of research.

What I Expect When I Go Back To The Philippines?

This blog post will be a short "journal entry".

So were boarding a flight on the 16th (I forgot the exact date) to go back to the Philippines for Christmas. There's so many things I expect.

• The Weather. Goodness. From a snowy wonderland here in Stockholm to a humid, tropical place near the equator. I feel that I'll sense this even in my first hour after landing. That's a 30 degree (Celsius) difference!

• The Food. (Extreme Emphasis on Rice)  As a Filipino, I really do enjoy eating rice. But the past months of living in Stockholm, we're trying to eat healthier stuff, including stripping our rice from 1 to 3 portions of rice (breakfast, lunch and dinner) per day to 1 to 2 portions of rice per week. And we try to eat brown rice here, unlike white rice in the Philippines. But don't get me wrong, rice is awesome.

• The People. There are about 100 MILLION people living in the Philippines now, and there are about 9 Million living in Sweden. Take note that Sweden is also larger than the Philippines area wise.

EATS: Hot Beverages at Espresso House, Sabbatsberg

Before I start this blog post, I just wanted to thank Giulia, Patricia, Daniele and Gloria for spreading the word about my blog!

Whether you've stayed in Stockholm for a long time, have just visited once, or will just visit, I assure you will Espresso House all around you. I wouldn't be surprised if they have one Espresso House per two kilometers.

Fortunately, we live in a place near a park, a hospital, a supermarket, a train station and an Espresso House. We've visited this particular branch a couple of times, and I couldn't blog about it because I always forget my phone.

My sister and I ordered the White Hot Chocolate, my dad got a Latte and my mom got a normal Hot Chocolate. 

My drink tasted okay, but not very good. The thing that concerns me is that did they really use white chocolate or milk? I couldn't really taste the difference.... 

Besides hot beverages, Espresso House also offers a good variety of sandwiches, cookies and other sweet stuff and smoothies.

RANT: "En Eller Et?" -- The Swedish Language and Its Lack of Rules

So many certain things can be frustrating while travelling to different places. Here's another topic I want to share, and it's one of the more "narrowed down" topics of learning how to speak Swedish.

Swedish is a relatively easy language to learn. As with every language though, there are some rules to follow. THIS is just one thing that the Swedish language lacks. 

If I wanted to say the definite article (meaning a certain type of thing - e.g "THE house" instead of "A house") of something in English, I would add the word "the" in front of the word. 

-- As in the cases of "THE flowers", "THE bookshef", "THE dog". 

In Swedish, however, you need to know the gender of the certain word, before you change it to its definite article. The two genders are the "en" and the "ett".

-- For example, "hund" (Swedish for "dog"), is an "en" word. To transform this word into its definite article ("the dogs"), you need to add the suffix "en" onto the end of the word. So if you want to say "the dogs" you say "hunden". 

Now... How exactly do you know if a word is an "en" or an "ett" word? NOBODY KNOWS! So it's recommended that you memorize if it's either an "en" or "ett" word from the start. So much more work... 

I think that many other languages are like this (?). Not exactly like this, but are some languages suffering this differently? Do they have too much rules? Or is it like this language that has too little?

Reflection: 5 Months in Stockholm

First of all, I just want to apologize that I haven't posted in the couple of days.... I too am aware of that.

Okay, so today {25 November '13} is the official 5 months since living here in Stockholm. There have been (what seemed) a thousand highs and awesome experiences that I have encountered here... Now, I want to reflect on some of them. 

Best Travelling Highlight would be Gamla Stan and the Vasa Museum. Two of the most iconic Stockholm attractions, I suppose. Gamla Stan is very cool and vibrant because of its awesome architecture and the numerous attractions there. The Vasa Museum because it's just a wonderful piece of reconstructed art. 

Best EATS Experience would probably be Jensen's Beefhouse! I just love their steaks! They have lots of locations around Stockholm and (I think) around the Scandinavia area... By the way, I LOVE the sauce that comes with their Lunch Steak... I'm sure it doesn't just come with their Lunch Steak, but it's to die for. 

Another EATS Experience that I would love to blog about was our FIRST experience at a "posh-er" restaurant... Melanders in Dalagatan (Vasastaden)... I haven't blogged about it, but I hope I still have my experience in my memory. 

Highlights of Stockholm Living... There are lots of stuff that I love about Stockholm. One is that there are so many parks and stuff. It's just good to know that there's so much "wiggle-space" for recreation and stuff. Living in Stockholm is very good, but the prices may be a bit steep... I hope you read my blog post on me ranting about how Stockholm is expensive. 

I am most excited about... I am definitely excited about experiencing my first snowfall. It would be so cool to wake up one morning seeing snow just falling down from your room window. I would never experience this in a country with 30 degree Celsius temperature, so this will be one of my ultimate milestones.

Finally, I just want to say that these five months that just passed went by like a heartbeat. There have been so much awesome events that happened (and certainly so much great eats). I do say that I'm looking forward with everything ahead considering Stockholm, Sweden and everything!

RANT | Why Is Stockholm So Expensive?

I decided to do another rant, because I think when you go to Stockholm, this is the most obvious thing you will notice (besides the beauty of Gamla Stan)... It's so expensive.

So why IS Stockholm so expensive? Of course you come here, you will admire the beauty of the surroundings and the old-style architecture, but you will pay hefty fees even if you want to go to McDonalds.

The cheapest thing you can buy at McDonalds is a plain ice cream in a cone, worth SEK 9 (about US$ 1.5). The ice cream isn't as big as my hand. Trust me.... I'm thirteen.

YOU CAN stay in Stockholm  cheaper though. Keyword "cheaper", not "70% lower". You need to put some effort into it, though.

I want to skip the accommodation part, because I don't have experience there, but I do know that it'll set you back, most likely if you're staying at either a well-known hotel or a hotel near the city center.

For the food part, you can buy cheaper breads and stuff in the local supermarkets. Scope the supermarket for a bargain of bacon, ham or other meats, and just cook them in your house (if you have a kitchen). If you don't have a kitchen, you still can buy some stuff at McDonalds for less than SEK 20. (One of my personal favorites, a Double Cheeseburger will set you back SEK 20).

RANT | The Ratchet Closing Times of Swedish Stores

There might be some things you'll be concerned or enraged about while your travelling, and I'm about to share mine. It's not a "rant" kind of rant.... I just don't know why.

So recently, my family and I chose to go out this evening to get a cup of hot chocolate in a coffee shop near our house. And guess what? It was closed.

The thing about this is... it was six in the evening. I mean, what kind of establishment closes at 6?

Something worth talking about: If you're going to Stockholm, GET YOUR SHOPPING DONE EARLY. Some people might describe "early" as 5 in the afternoon, but be prepared to see the shops closing and packing up by then.

I don't know why they close so early though. This is just one of the things that can puzzle you while travelling.

But alas, we all need to deal with cultural differences, and I need to deal that I didn't get some hot white chocolate from Espresso House.

UPDATE: Getting Ready for Gothenburg!

Currently here in Stockholm, the Middle School students are experiencing their fall break... which will be finished in a couple of days. So we thought that a perfect way to end this break was to travel. Isn't travelling the solution for anything though? {lol, jk, but most of it, maybe?}

So we're gonna visit one of my mom's relatives living in Gothenburg (which is still in Sweden). I really don't know though if the house we're staying at has Wi-Fi (pray to the heavens it has), but I will still keep track of my travelling {and eating} experiences for you!, But don't expect for me to post anything for the few days coming up, though.

EATS: Bellman Cafe & Konditori

Whilst shopping for clothes and stuff in Central Stockholm, we thought that we grab a quick drink/snack at one of the nearby cafes near Hotorget and the Stockholm Concert House.

We came past Bellman Cafe & Konditori, one of the first cafes we spotted. 

I ordered a raspberry smoothie and a chocolate chip cookie, my stepdad ordered a latte, my sister wanted a Pepsi and a double chocolate cookies and my mom got hot chocolate and a double chocolate cookie. 

The cookies were very good, considering that they were filled with chunks of chocolate. The smoothie was OK. It was very sour and it wasn't very cold. 

I forgot to mention that they also sell a wide variety of pastries, cakes and savory sandwiches.

ANSWERS to the United Nations Fact Game

Before reading on, CLICK HERE if you haven't seen the main post. Or just click it even if you don't remember the statements or your answers.

So in the last post {click the link above}, I put out 10 statements considering the United Nations, 8 of which were true, two of which were false. The answers are below!

Statement 2 was a false answer. The first general assembly of the United Nations was convened in the Central Hall of London (in Westminister) and was held on the 10th of January, 1946, not on the 10th of January 1947.

Statement 8 was also a wrong answer. When this blog post was published (28 October, '13), there were only 193 member nations of the United Nations, as opposed to 195 on my first blog post.

"To try new food. I really liked going to Portugal because we went to the Lisbon Aquarium and I saw different species of fish, ate different kinds of food and got to see the capital city, Lisbon." 

2:  Favorite Stockholm tourist attraction?

"I really like the Stockholm Public Library. It's really amazing and interesting and I recommend you to go there."

"When you have decided on where in the world you really want to go, you need to read or research about it first. For example, research about its tourist spots or culture."

"The city center or the capital city, Vilnius. In the evening, it's really beautiful and pretty. Also go to the tower of Gediminas (picture on the left). Highly recommended."

EATS: Tim Tam's from Australia

My stepdad went to Australia the past week to check on his farm and some other stuff that grown-ups do. 

We made a checklist on what to bring from Australia and back here to Stockholm. Among the list were staplers, supplies for school, Microsoft Office disks and Australian foodstuffs. 

He brought me two packets of TimTams, a biscuit kinda like a Kitkat (name resemblance, eh?), two packs of our favorite nougat and VEGEMITE. 

Based from internet sources, a packet of TimTams cost from about 2.50 to 3.20 Australian dollars, about 16-20 Swedish Crowns or 2-3 U.S dollars.

First Impression: Once I opened the packet up, I thought that they would go beautiful as an accompaniment to afternoon tea or coffee. 

I tried the original one first, because you always need to try the original ones first, duh. IT WAS AMAZING! The filling was very creamy and was very delicious. I think it was too biscuit-y though, but I don't care. It's very good. Highly recommend. The texture of the biscuit was like a thinner but wider Kit-Kat. 

Then I tried the dark chocolate one. I personally prefer milk chocolate (in general), because of its creaminess, and I think that dark chocolate is quite bitter, and white chocolate is just... "ehh". 

This kind of dark chocolate biscuit was good too, but it was kinda bitter too. Clearly not a disappointment, though.

Thoughts for Travelling PART 1: Stephanie Younan

So this is a new series on my blog. Something where I don't get to express my opinion, somebody else does, I just ask the questions. Welcome to Thoughts for Travelling, the series where I interview some of my closest friends and their travelling experiences.

PART 1: Stephanie Younan  -- First featured in "More Pastries from Hemkop" blog post, where she treated us before she went back to Canada.

1: What do you think about Sweden's tourist spots? What was your favorite one?

"Yeah. Söderköping was nice. I liked the view and their ice cream. It was just a very relaxing place. Gamla Stan isn't too bad either."

2: What is the best thing to eat here in Sweden?

" Definitely the ice cream from Söderköping was awesome, and so are the ones in Gamla Stan, because they make their ice cream cones fresh." 

3: What's the best travel tip you can share to us?

" Always arrive at your train station or airport or whatever an hour and a half early. It really makes a difference. Things go faster." 

4: Have you been to any other countries other than Sweden and your own (Canada)? How was your experiences?

"It depends. In Finland, it was cool to see their small markets and the police festival. In Milan, we stayed at a monastery and it was like heaven. Denmark was a little nicer than Sweden. New York is so busy. Everything there is just like... filled. Belgium was beautiful as well. None can compare to my love of Canada, though, because it is my home." 

5: When I say "travelling", what comes into your mind?

"First, I think of where we're going and how I imagine it. Will it be hot? cold? freezing? warm? Then, I think about what I can see. Will I see trees? buildings? ancient stuff? I then think about the plane ride next. Will it be bumpy? Will we get there smoothly? Then, I think about how much I wish my friends could be there to share my adventures with me."
