EATS: Bansko's Chateau Antique

Our final night in Bansko and unfortunately, my dad was not feeling very well. He decided to stay home with my mom, and let my sister and I to have dinner with our friends. Here's what he missed out:

The exterior of the restaurant was a type of a castle, which interested me immediately. Once entering, it was a rather fancy looking restaurant with a bar and ornate decorations and paintings on the walls. We ate in the fanciest setting I could have imagined; a part of the restaurant which was perfect for a huge round table, set up flawlessly. The only thing missing was the president to step in and join in on our dinner.

Since we had a snack earlier (Tip: Do not buy any street vendor pizza in Bansko. You can pay 2 Lev for bread at the supermarket that has the same taste.), my sister and I chose the lightest appetizer, a small pizza (again?!). It looks like a pizza, but it was garlic bread. 

The garlic bread was not up to par with my expectations. My first slice of the home-baked bread was bitter... and all was revealed when I flipped the bread over: it was burnt. 

I opted for a pasta dish for my main. Above is a ricotta and spinach stuffed ravioli with mushroom and walnut sauce. The pasta didn't have the spinach and ricotta taste, but the sauce made up for it by giving it the body that it needs. I am also a big fan of mushrooms, where it and the cream made a satisfying duo. The walnuts gave it an unusual texture, but did not do much besides that.

The final dinner before we go back to Stockholm concluded with tiramisu. The tiramisu gave this "okay" meal a delightful finish. The ladies fingers were covered with that lovable coffee taste, and the cream tastes very good... I wish there was more lady fingers though.

The Original Swedish Frozen Yogurt Factory can be found in Gallerian, a mall near Stockholm's Central-Station.

What I had was a fat and sugar free strawberry yogurt with chocolate cream and coconut bits and Kex Chocolate halves. Clearly, I made up my fat and sugar with the candy toppings I had.

It was delightful. The yogurt had the strawberry taste I craved, and the crunch of the toppings mixed very well. 

My sister had this sizable monster of yogurt with fat and sugar. Chocolate and vanilla yogurt with sprinkles:

With a price of 20 Crowns per 100 grams, I think it's reasonable. Quick bite!

Those Boring Moments...

So once in a while when you're travelling, you'll get bored. You won't get bored with the things you see in the country, the experiences, and blah blah blah, but you will experience either a long train / air-plane ride, a flight layover that seems like eternity, or even just waiting for the bus going to town. So here's some stuff you can do to let that time pass by:

• Probably, the most obvious thing you can do on a long flight / ride is to sleep and rest. Recline your chair and just close your eyes for a minute, or even an hour or so. Sleeping can get you relaxed and will make you more energetic and pumped up to go to your location. Just remember to fasten your seatbelt when the seatbelt sign is on. 

• A long flight is a great opportunity for you to catch up on your reading. There are a lot of available books to choose from today. Or maybe read more about travelling? I recommend Europe on a Shoestring from Lonely Planet for a good read on travel in Europe on a budget! 

• Listening to music is another great option. When I was sick when I was back in the Philippines, I listened to music and it just made me feel more energetic. Sounds kinda "cheezy", but music can also make a difference to your waiting time.

• Remember to fully charge your phone, iPad or any other kind of technology and play games.  

• Write, sketch or draw. Exercise your skills in literary writing, drawing or even just talk about your flight experience or doodle. As long as you're getting entertained in what you're doing, it will contribute to that lameness of what you're feeling throughout the trip. 

Well, that's just some advice that I can give you, but I'm sure that there are tons more. Oh, and by the way, I just want to say thank you for reading and supporting my blog. Means a lot. :)

EATS: Hemma Vasastan

Hemma Vasastan is a restaurant literally about sixty feet within our apartment in Odenplan. 

The restaurant seemed pretty calm on the outside, but the things completely changed after a step through the front door.

30 to 50 people were crowded near the restaurant's entrance, where the pub is, talking and shouting, watching a football match of some sort. That immediately changed my perspective.

Fast forward onto our appetizer: garlic bread with mozzarella and chili aioli. I don't quite know why I'm a sucker for garlic bread. It's just so good! It tastes even better with the mild aioli. Just perfection.

Main course: Biff Rydberg with mustard cream. Beef Rydberg is one of my most favorite meals EVER and they manage to keep the meal my favorite. I ordered the meat medium (as always), and it came with potato and roasted onions and an egg yolk. Definitely one of the best dishes I've ever tasted. Mustard cream was gross for me. Eew.

Generous portions!!!

Finally, a three tier sorbet to finish off the dinner. Admittedly, the sorbet was plenty, and consisted of mango, strawberry and green apple. Not that sour, but it was a great dessert nevertheless.

My dad, mom and sister had cheese and crackers, a generous portion of ice cream with Bailey's topping and chocolate truffle for their desserts.

EATS: Contis' Bakeshop & Restaurant

With the urge to see my auntie at work (and the suggestion of my mom to see her in her working atmosphere), we went to Contis' Bakeshop and Restaurant in Greenbelt 3. 

{Yes, I know that yesterday's post was also in Greenbelt, but this happened after Christmas, not before.}

Disclaimer: I'm posting my true experiences here, and not just "sucking up" to the restaurant just because my auntie work's there. Just saying that this is the truth. We don't want conspiracies, don't we?

I ordered Tapa from their "All Day Brunch" section of the menu, while my mom and my sister ordered some Lasagna and a Clubhouse Sandwich respectively. 

* Tapa -  Usually marinated fried pork is what I imagine "Tapa" is. 

The tapa was good! It was a great match with their atchara (I think this is pickled papaya). It was also served with vinegar, but I prefer not to eat the tapa with the vinegar. However, the scrambled egg was the showstopper! I really was lost in the flavor of the egg that I don't even recognize the other ingredients used besides the egg. As always, no Filipino breakfast is complete without garlic rice.

My mom said that her lasagna was kinda salty, because of the cheese covering the lasagna. As always, my sister was not disappointed, and nor was I (she offered me some) on the clubhouse. 

Our auntie also gave us complimentary slices of cake (ain't she nice?)! I got my favorite, Turtle Pie, while my mom had some sort of peach cake and my sister got a Blueberry Cheesecake.

The Turtle Pie. It was absolutely... wonderful. It was a thick layer of chocolate before some sort of salty caramel before the crust. It was also topped with walnuts. Just like the Daim chocolate I had in Sweden, the slight saltiness and the decadent sweetness of the cake mixed together very well. It's just  absolutely wonderful, and you just need to taste it yourself to share my joy.

Overall, our experience here in Contis' was grand. Additionally, Contis' offers an extensive range of pastries (from sweet to savory things) cakes, and savory dishes. From all the cake shops in the Philippines that I've been, I have never tasted cakes as great as Contis' have. I would surely, 100% come again.

EATS: Jollibee @ Festival Mall

Ahhh Jollibee. If you roam around the streets of Manila, there's a 90% chance of you spotting one or two (or four, or twelve...), Jollibee is the most iconic Philippine fast food chain. It serves fried chicken, burgers, sandwiches and even pasta. 

We went to the Jollibee at the Festival Mall's fourth floor. No doubt, it was really busy. If you're living in Scandinavia, Jollibee is as busy, if not much more busier than Jensen's Böfhus. 

So they're famous for their Chickenjoy, which to me is a really weird name for fried chicken. My sister had this. 

I had the Burger Steak! They're basically two burger patties smothered with some kind of special gravy and a bit of mushrooms. The patties were "eh". I needed more gravy and mushrooms though.

Some fries on the side. There fries are really good because their long and crispy. Highly recommend!

Honestly, Jollibee is just one of those things that you need to experience when you're going to Manila, or the Philippines. Just get some fries and a Coke or whatever, and just experience the atmosphere. I really don't know if you'll like or hate the atmosphere, but as long as you experienced it.

Group Bonding @ the Alabang Town Center {Timezone}

After 5 months in Stockholm, it was really good to meet The Group and have some fun! I see them almost every day back in the Philippines, so it'll be very good to meet them again.

On the picture is (from left to right) Yonits, Pauline (Pau), Sean (Mica), Michael and me.



We went to the Alabang Town Center! What I like about this mall is that it's really big (for me), and that it has lots of "natural elements" to it. It has an open area in the mall which is a nice touch for like, sitting down and thinking about your life (there's a coffee shop right next to the open area, so think about your life while downing a latte).

The main mall building has a whole lot of shops, may it be electronic, restaurants, bookstores, kiosks (which often sell tees, shirts, etc), and et cetera. There's also a food court, a 7-11, a movie theatre, and a lazer tag center.

We spent most of our time in Timezone, which is an arcade on the topmost floor of the Alabang Time Center. 

Timezone has lots of ticket redemption games, claw machines {spoiler: they never let you win} and they even have karaoke stations! You're required to load up a card and swipe the card on the swiping things on the machine you want to play. 

Our experience was really fun! Yonits and Pau really enjoyed DJ Teknika while Michael didn't even come close to 6,000 points in the Temple Run arcade game... I enjoyed Slam a Winner, cause it was a piece of cake to get 100 tickets.

We ended the bonding with a dreadfully long walk to the open area shown above and to Jollibee for a sundae.

The 1st group bonding was (In my opinion), the best one we had. This was fun though, nonetheless! Looking forward to meet y'all again!

EATS: Espression Lavazza - Stockholm's Arlanda Airport

A quick snack before we board a 2 hour flight to Amsterdam (flight from Stockholm to Amsterdam experience will come out tomorrow!) was spent at Espression in Stockholm's Arlanda Airport.






I had the Chocolate Covered Chocolate Muffin (diabetes!). It was good, but I expected more!!

My mom had the Blueberry Muffin together with a Hot Chocolate.

EATS: Chopsticks Restaurant

Nothing like a nice buffet to finish off a rather cold Saturday. 

The Chopsticks Restaurant is an Asian-inspired (mainly buffet) restaurant in Stockholm. It is located around Centralstation and the city center. 

We had dinner here last night and we got the buffet! 

TIP: If you're going to a buffet, take a small (additional emphasis on SMALL) sample of the things you would like to try. Try all of them if you wish, but take a SMALL SAMPLE. Then if you like some stuff, get more of those. Maximize the variety, and don't just stick with 1 thing to eat. That's why it's a buffet: for you to sample everything (and to eat lots).

NOM NOM NOM! Everything on this plate was great, but the noodles.... I can't explain how I don't like them though... The shrimp and the dumplings were the best! The chicken was fine, but if you're going to eat the chicken in this restaurant, don't be surprised if the whole tray is finished within two minutes... Just saying.

My favorite was the salmon and the crabstick sushi. I quite like the seaweed (?) wrapped one too... The cucumber inside it gives it a little kick. The rest were "eh", not quite up to par with the others. 

The next plates were mainly just more of the shrimp and the dumplings and the chicken. Then I had dessert, 3 medium scoops of raspberry ice-cream from their ice-cream bar. 

They also had a selection of uncooked meat and vegetables, where you can pick your favorites and let the chef cook it for you live. I didn't chose that option though, I wanted my food right away. 

Price wise, I think it's quite steep. SEK 820 (US$ 126) for a buffet for four....

Swedish Traditions

Here's four traditions you might come across in Sweden:

1: Crayfish Parties. You might get invited to one when you have friends here. I don't personally like boiled crayfish, because you need to do so much stuff (like take away the shell/whatever, etc.) before you can eat just a certain amount of meat in one crayfish.

2: Midsummer. In mid-June school is out. It is an occasion of large gatherings. Many Swedes take advantage of this time to fulfil their social obligations. Swedes even celebrate "Midsummer Eve", always taking place on a Friday between the 19th to the 25th of June. It is advised to spend Midsummer's Eve at a countryside. 

3: Sour Herrring. This dish is made by small Baltic herring, which are then salted and fermented. Sour herring has a strong, pungent smell of rotting fish. The traditional way of eating sour herring is with a piece of thin bread, butter the bread, place the herring, put something like an "almond-shaped potato" and some chopped onions before eating. 

4: Sweden's National Day. On the 6th of June (a day before my birthday), the King and the Queen take part in a ceremony in Skansen (Click here to see that blog post). In 2005, the Swedish parliament voted to make this date a public  holiday.

EATS: Swedish (?) Chocolate

Sidenote: The title has a question mark on it because I'm not 100% sure that everything here is purely Swedish.


Food wise, Sweden has lots of stuff to offer. From microwavable meatballs to the ice cream you get in Gamla Stan, one thing unique (to me) is their chocolate.

My definition of "unique" is things that I've never seen or heard before, so if this is in your country, and not exactly unique to Sweden, pardon.

First is Milch-Nuss! This is a chocolate bar with chopped hazelnuts mixed in to it. Me and my friends thought it would be a good bargain to buy, 'cause it costed SEK 5. (~90 US cents). It was very "eh", and there weren't that much hazelnuts in to it. 

One of the most iconic chocolates made in Sweden would probably be Marabou. Trust me, it's everywhere. Marabou comes in a whole range of flavors, and in this blog post, we chose Marabou and chunks of Daim chocolate. 

I LOVE DAIM!

This is probably one of the best things I have ever tasted. Daim's hard caramel is to die for. I could literally finish a whole separate bar of Daim in two minutes, even though it's hard to bite. The separate Marabou was good too, but I think that since the caramel didn't melt easily, it had a more obvious flavor.

EATS: Hot Beverages at Espresso House, Sabbatsberg

Before I start this blog post, I just wanted to thank Giulia, Patricia, Daniele and Gloria for spreading the word about my blog!

Whether you've stayed in Stockholm for a long time, have just visited once, or will just visit, I assure you will Espresso House all around you. I wouldn't be surprised if they have one Espresso House per two kilometers.

Fortunately, we live in a place near a park, a hospital, a supermarket, a train station and an Espresso House. We've visited this particular branch a couple of times, and I couldn't blog about it because I always forget my phone.

My sister and I ordered the White Hot Chocolate, my dad got a Latte and my mom got a normal Hot Chocolate. 

My drink tasted okay, but not very good. The thing that concerns me is that did they really use white chocolate or milk? I couldn't really taste the difference.... 

Besides hot beverages, Espresso House also offers a good variety of sandwiches, cookies and other sweet stuff and smoothies.

RANT: "En Eller Et?" -- The Swedish Language and Its Lack of Rules

So many certain things can be frustrating while travelling to different places. Here's another topic I want to share, and it's one of the more "narrowed down" topics of learning how to speak Swedish.

Swedish is a relatively easy language to learn. As with every language though, there are some rules to follow. THIS is just one thing that the Swedish language lacks. 

If I wanted to say the definite article (meaning a certain type of thing - e.g "THE house" instead of "A house") of something in English, I would add the word "the" in front of the word. 

-- As in the cases of "THE flowers", "THE bookshef", "THE dog". 

In Swedish, however, you need to know the gender of the certain word, before you change it to its definite article. The two genders are the "en" and the "ett".

-- For example, "hund" (Swedish for "dog"), is an "en" word. To transform this word into its definite article ("the dogs"), you need to add the suffix "en" onto the end of the word. So if you want to say "the dogs" you say "hunden". 

Now... How exactly do you know if a word is an "en" or an "ett" word? NOBODY KNOWS! So it's recommended that you memorize if it's either an "en" or "ett" word from the start. So much more work... 

I think that many other languages are like this (?). Not exactly like this, but are some languages suffering this differently? Do they have too much rules? Or is it like this language that has too little?

Reflection: 5 Months in Stockholm

First of all, I just want to apologize that I haven't posted in the couple of days.... I too am aware of that.

Okay, so today {25 November '13} is the official 5 months since living here in Stockholm. There have been (what seemed) a thousand highs and awesome experiences that I have encountered here... Now, I want to reflect on some of them. 

Best Travelling Highlight would be Gamla Stan and the Vasa Museum. Two of the most iconic Stockholm attractions, I suppose. Gamla Stan is very cool and vibrant because of its awesome architecture and the numerous attractions there. The Vasa Museum because it's just a wonderful piece of reconstructed art. 

Best EATS Experience would probably be Jensen's Beefhouse! I just love their steaks! They have lots of locations around Stockholm and (I think) around the Scandinavia area... By the way, I LOVE the sauce that comes with their Lunch Steak... I'm sure it doesn't just come with their Lunch Steak, but it's to die for. 

Another EATS Experience that I would love to blog about was our FIRST experience at a "posh-er" restaurant... Melanders in Dalagatan (Vasastaden)... I haven't blogged about it, but I hope I still have my experience in my memory. 

Highlights of Stockholm Living... There are lots of stuff that I love about Stockholm. One is that there are so many parks and stuff. It's just good to know that there's so much "wiggle-space" for recreation and stuff. Living in Stockholm is very good, but the prices may be a bit steep... I hope you read my blog post on me ranting about how Stockholm is expensive. 

I am most excited about... I am definitely excited about experiencing my first snowfall. It would be so cool to wake up one morning seeing snow just falling down from your room window. I would never experience this in a country with 30 degree Celsius temperature, so this will be one of my ultimate milestones.

Finally, I just want to say that these five months that just passed went by like a heartbeat. There have been so much awesome events that happened (and certainly so much great eats). I do say that I'm looking forward with everything ahead considering Stockholm, Sweden and everything!

RANT | Why Is Stockholm So Expensive?

I decided to do another rant, because I think when you go to Stockholm, this is the most obvious thing you will notice (besides the beauty of Gamla Stan)... It's so expensive.

So why IS Stockholm so expensive? Of course you come here, you will admire the beauty of the surroundings and the old-style architecture, but you will pay hefty fees even if you want to go to McDonalds.

The cheapest thing you can buy at McDonalds is a plain ice cream in a cone, worth SEK 9 (about US$ 1.5). The ice cream isn't as big as my hand. Trust me.... I'm thirteen.

YOU CAN stay in Stockholm  cheaper though. Keyword "cheaper", not "70% lower". You need to put some effort into it, though.

I want to skip the accommodation part, because I don't have experience there, but I do know that it'll set you back, most likely if you're staying at either a well-known hotel or a hotel near the city center.

For the food part, you can buy cheaper breads and stuff in the local supermarkets. Scope the supermarket for a bargain of bacon, ham or other meats, and just cook them in your house (if you have a kitchen). If you don't have a kitchen, you still can buy some stuff at McDonalds for less than SEK 20. (One of my personal favorites, a Double Cheeseburger will set you back SEK 20).

EATS: Subway's Sandwiches

Before this happened, me and some of my friends ate cookies from Subway. Click Here to read it.

Last Sunday, me and my friends wanted to grab some lunch from Subway, so we did!

Gloria and I chose the Subway Melt, and just bought a footlong to share (SEK 50). It was really awesome that they can customize what vegetables or sauce you can put on. We chose every vegetable except onions and tomatoes. 

The sandwich wasn't "the bomb" but it wasn't terrible either. Subway restaurants are so rare in the Philippines, so I've never ate there before. The sandwich could have been in the toaster more though, it was kinda cold.  MORE CHEESE, PLEASE!

Steak and Cheese

Meanwhile, Linh had a Steak & Cheese 1/2 Footlong (SEK 40-49). After she finished this, she bought another sandwich! She bought a Chicken Teriyaki 1/2 footlong (SEK 40-49). Clearly, she was very hungry.

Gloria polished her lunch off with a cookie, while I bought my cookie for my sister.

RANT | The Ratchet Closing Times of Swedish Stores

There might be some things you'll be concerned or enraged about while your travelling, and I'm about to share mine. It's not a "rant" kind of rant.... I just don't know why.

So recently, my family and I chose to go out this evening to get a cup of hot chocolate in a coffee shop near our house. And guess what? It was closed.

The thing about this is... it was six in the evening. I mean, what kind of establishment closes at 6?

Something worth talking about: If you're going to Stockholm, GET YOUR SHOPPING DONE EARLY. Some people might describe "early" as 5 in the afternoon, but be prepared to see the shops closing and packing up by then.

I don't know why they close so early though. This is just one of the things that can puzzle you while travelling.

But alas, we all need to deal with cultural differences, and I need to deal that I didn't get some hot white chocolate from Espresso House.

EATS: All Star Sportsbar - Stockholm

Just after our experience at Pizza Hut (Click Here To View), we decided to grab another bite to eat. As we were walking, we saw a sports-bar that was quite reputable, so we decided to go in there.

After we ordered some drinks (which was Sprite for me and my sister and wine for the parents), we were given some complimentary popcorn. It was very enjoying munching on the popcorn while watching two guys play tennis.

We then had some more things to eat. We had the garlic bread with spicy aioli (SEK 59) and the All Star Megasnacks (SEK 120). The "Mega-Snacks" consisted of mozzarella sticks, cheese and spinach, nachos. Sauces were guacamole, salsa, melted cheese and my favorite, sour cream.

All Star "Mega Snacks"

 My absolute favorites were the garlic bread and the mozzarella sticks. The mozzarella sticks were awesome, because it was CHEESE. Surprisingly, I didn't like them when dipped on the cheese sauce. I liked them better with the sour cream.

The garlic bread was great, but not a fan of the aioli though. The nachos (I think) were made on-the-spot and went well with all the dips.

The worst thing was the deep fried rolls of cheese and spinach (those oval things in the Mega Snacks), because they didn't taste well together. They were bite-sized, and I actually just ate half of the bite-sized thing.


I would absolutely go back! 8.5 out of 10.

EATS: Pizza Hut @ Klarabergsgatan, Stockholm

It was my mom's friend's birthday a couple of days ago, and my mom decided to "treat" her by going to Pizza Hut. Since everything is an opportunity, I decided to blog about it. 

The things we ordered were Chicken Wings (for my mom's friend's son), a "Super Supreme" and a "Meatlovers" medium sized pizza.

The Meatlovers pizza was very good, but the crust was a bit soggy. It was filled with meat and the cheese was melted perfectly, that when we cut a slice, the cheese was still sticking from one pizza slice to the whole pizza. This pizza consisted of ham and mini-meatballs. There wasn't enough cheese for me, though.

The Super Supreme has got to be one of my favorites. It's a combination of ham, cheese, bell peppers, onions and lots of other superb stuff. It tasted good because there was lots of stuff on it. A bit more cheese would do, though.

But who am I to judge a fast food place? Let me tell you, the restaurant's inside looks awesome, of that of a five-star one.

EATS: Subway's Cookies

After we ended class a few days ago, I was so exhausted because of P.E... I needed energy, I need sugar!

What I thought was for me to get a cookie in a Subway restaurant near the Skanstull station, so I went and bought some with my friends Gloria and Shriya.

White Chocolate Macadamia

We bought three cookies (1 cookie = SEK 10, 3 cookies = SEK 25). I got the White Chocolate Macadamia, Shriya got the Double Chocolate Chunk and Gloria got the Chocolate M&M's or something.

Shriya said that her's was very good, because of the chocolate chips, chocolate cookie and the melted chocolate on top (Way to go Shriya. You got diabetes now.). She passed me and Gloria some crumbs (!) so that we could taste her cookie. It was burnt.

Gloria said that her cookie was fine, but based from her facial expression I think she wanted more. More M&M's.

My cookie was the best. I like how it was crunchy because of the Macadamias but at the same time chewy. I LOVE CHEWY COOKIES! I wouldn't say this was the best cookie I have ever eaten, but it is one of my favorite ones.

• One day later... 

So I found out that I could get another free cookie from Subway if I go to their website and fill out a survey form. I filled out the survey form online and I went there the next day to get my cookie. 

Only Linh and my sister came with me to Subway, though. We chose to get the original cookies, the Chocolate Chip Chunk, and it was good. It was chewy again, but nothing can seriously beat the cookie I had.

Note: There was some debate about the "free cookie after you take the survey" from the cashier and another staff member, but I did get a free cookie.
